john. >> reporter: frank, this has been a very tense day here in vallejo. we're at the corner of illinois street and sonoma. a pink and white house which has a gaping hole in the front. an armored vehicle slammed into it this afternoon. this episode started around 11:30 when police received calls about a man with a rifle. dozens of officers rushed to the scene, blocked off the area and started negotiating with the man. at some point he either fired with the officers or pointed his weapon at them. officer opened fire, unleashing perhaps dozens of rounds. they rammed the vehicle into that house. a short time later the man was found dead inside. >> we heard police outside. when we looked out the window we saw the police and commotion. >> as we were trying to get him to give up peacefully he came to the front of the residence, broke a window out with a shotgun and pointed it at the officers. the officers fired on the man. >> reporter: police say they're trying to determine whether police shot and killed the man or if he committed suicide. they added they are fa
